On October 26, the ADRA Asia Regional office will begin a six-day exercise of their emergency response capabilities by way of a simulated disaster event. As in a real event, the location will only be disclosed on that date. ADRA emergency management coordinators in 11 countries will be notified on that date of the location and the exercise scenario (flood, earthquake, landslide, etc.). An ADRA emergency response team will form at the location, just as they would in an actual emergency. They will then respond to simulated inputs, and an observer team will take notes throughout the exercise, which will continue for several days and which will challenge team performance in a controlled but realistic and challenging environment.
Gregg Swanson of HumaniNet has been invited as an observer and will work with the ADRA team on field communications. Telenor Satellite Systems is providing mobile satellite equipment for use by the emergency response team.
Watch this blog for Gregg's comments as the exercise approaches, as he travels to Asia, and as the exercise gets under way. He will send reports and photos from the field, over satellite, just as relief teams might do in an actual response.
